Who is my Father?

“Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.” John 5:19

Each of us is familiar with the struggle against our sinful nature. We try to do right but fail repeatedly, leaving us discouraged and frustrated, crying out, “What’s the point?”

One evening during a prayer meeting, someone read John 5:19, “Then Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.’” Suddenly, it occurred to me that children mimic their parents, shaping their behaviour and character from what they observe. If we desire a different nature, we need the right pattern. But if our habits feel fixed, what hope is there?

When sin entered the world, humanity was thrust out of God’s family, alienated from His presence. But God, in His wisdom, created a solution, “But as many as received him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God…” (John 1:12). Through Jesus, we are adopted into God’s family and born again as His children. As we behold our new Father each day through His Word, we are transformed: “...beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image...” (2 Corinthians 3:18).

Make daily time with God a priority. The next time you find yourself struggling, ask yourself, “Who is my Father?
