As the British Union Conference (BUC) Session 2026 (1-3 July) approaches, it is helpful to understand the role of two key committees that support the orderly and representative conduct of the Session: The Recommendations Committee and the Nominating Committee.
While much of the Session is visible to delegates, some of the most important preparatory work takes place through these committees.
The Recommendations Committee
Within the BUC context, the Recommendations Committee serves a very specific and foundational role at the beginning of the Session process.
Its membership is drawn from across the Union – representing the North England Conference, South England Conference, Irish Mission, Scottish Mission, and Welsh Mission – ensuring broad representation from across the territory.
The committee has two primary responsibilities:
- To select from among the delegates, the members of the Nominating Committee
- To select members to form the Constitution Committee
These names are then brought to the full body of delegates as recommendations. Upon approval by the Session, these committees are formally constituted and begin their work.
In this way, the Recommendations Committee plays a crucial role in establishing the committees that will guide key aspects of the Session’s business.
The Nominating Committee
Once formed and approved by the Session, the Nominating Committee undertakes the responsibility of identifying and recommending individuals to serve in leadership roles within the Union for the next quinquennium.
This includes positions such as:
- Union officers
- Departmental directors
- Other roles as required within the Union structure
The work of the Nominating Committee is carried out prayerfully and carefully, with consideration given to the needs of the Church and the gifts, experience, and spiritual commitment of those being recommended.
Its recommendations are then presented to the Session for approval by the delegates.
A Process of Representation and Order
Together, these committees help ensure that the Session operates in a structured, representative, and transparent manner. From the initial formation of key committees to the recommendation of leadership, each step reflects a commitment to collective participation and thoughtful decision-making.
Looking Ahead
As delegates gather for the BUC Session 2026 at the Atrium Hotel Heathrow, London, the work of these committees will play an essential role in shaping both the leadership and the direction of the Church for the next five years.
Above all, this process is more than procedural – it is a shared responsibility, undertaken with prayerful dependence on God, as the Church seeks to move forward in unity and mission.
