We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mike Johnson on Monday 26 May, a broadcaster, author, gospel music enthusiast, and worship leader for over 30 years.

Mike formally served the Church in several capacities, first as Music Director in the South England Conference (SEC) and most recently as Programme Director for Adventist Radio London before starting Life Radio, a 24/7 online Christian radio station, in 2020 at the height of the pandemic.

In April, the British Union Conference (BUC) Stewardship department commissioned him to co-create a 12-part podcast series called ‘Heartbeat and Hurdles’, based on the 10 pillars of Stewardship, alongside Pastor Ian Sweeney, Field Secretary, Trans-European Division.

Sweeney recalls memories of Mike:

“The late and great British broadcaster Sir David Frost said, ‘...Don’t aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally...’ Mike loved radio and broadcasting, and his success came supernaturally. He was a gracious and kind host who allowed his guests to feel comfortable in front of (or is it behind?) a mic. He allowed his guests to speak but could gently tease them for more information or to gain further clarity. In his presence, you really felt as though you were in a conversation in which he was supremely interested.”

Thoughts from the BUC President, Pastor Eglan Brooks:

“Mike was innovative, groundbreaking and someone who desperately tried to modernise the Church. He was a committed and dedicated broadcaster who was willing to provide opportunities and mentorship to the upcoming generation. He was also passionate about worshipping God and enjoyed alternative methods of congregational worship.

He had a unique sense of humour and a desire to live without the shackles of limitations. Mike left a legacy of service, worship, and a passion for radio to the territory of the BUC and beyond that will long be remembered.”

Echoing these sentiments, Cathy Boldeau, BUC Stewardship Director, reflected on her working relationship with Mike: “I first worked with Mike on Camp Meeting radio under the leadership of Pastor Don McFarlane, the then President of the SEC. Our working relationship in radio and audio projects has spanned over two decades, including ‘Sabbath Breakfast’ on Adventist Radio London, hosting a special Royal Wedding radio show, and interviewing Princess Zamaswazi Dlamini-Mandela (Swati Mandela), granddaughter of Nelson and Winnie Mandela (listen to the full Sabbath Breakfast episode: https://www.spreaker.com/episode/swati-mandela-social-justice--16495811).

“Our most recent project was the ‘Heartbeat and Hurdles’ podcast series that we’d just finished recording in April for release this coming September. We had so much fun working on this project, but it was also thought-provoking. As usual, we spent many hours deliberating and debating over the content, scripture, illustrations, and pace, and also spent considerable time in prayer.

“Mike was a brother and a friend. He will be deeply missed.”

Mike also supported the work of ADRA by creating voice-overs for the video ‘Reflecting Hope’ and by producing interview podcasts with the speakers in 2023.

The British Union Conference extends its deepest condolences to his wife, Sonia, son Junior, daughter-in-law Cindy, and granddaughter Mia. We remember Mike’s life of unwavering faith and dedication, knowing he “fought the good fight, he finished the race, he kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7).

Funeral details will be shared when available.
