We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr Brian P Phillips on 16 July, 2025, at the age of 89. Dr Phillips was a cherished and faithful servant of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Wales. He passed away peacefully, having lived a life marked by exemplary faith, dedication, excellence, and humility.
He began his denominational employment in January 1989 in the Welsh Mission, serving as a licensed minister, lovingly supported by his wife, Joyce and daughter, Jane.
Phillips held a PhD, specialising in the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Wales, in 1993. Following his ordination in December 1994, he continued to serve as a local minister in the Welsh Mission territory. In September 2000, Phillips was called to serve as President of the Welsh Mission, a role he held until his retirement in October 2006. Sadly, his beloved wife, Joyce, passed away in November 2012.
Conversations with Brian often became journeys through time, guided by his deep understanding of the people and events that shaped the spiritual landscape of this nation.
Post-retirement, Phillips continued to minister to his church and community in faithful and dedicated service. In September 2019, he met and married Avril. He continued to remain actively involved, generously sharing his wealth of biblical and historical knowledge with dignity, humility and grace.
The funeral will take place on Tuesday, 5 August, at 1:00 pm at Mount Pleasant Church, Tabor Road, Maesycwmmer, Hengoed CF82 7PU, followed by the committal at Gelligaer Cemetery, Castle Hill, Gelligaer, Hengoed CF82 8EF. Livestream details will follow.
Donations in lieu of flowers will be forwarded to Friends for Myanmar and St David’s Hospice Care. The family would like to welcome all attendees to join them afterwards for refreshments and the sharing of memories.
As we keep Dr Phillips’ wife, Avril, daughter, Jane and the extended family and friends in our thoughts and prayers, let us remember the precious promise in Revelation 21:4, “…God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
