Called to Be Faithful

Catherine Anthony Boldeau, BUC Stewardship Director
19 March 2026

A British journalist once asked Mother Teresa how she continued her work, knowing she would never meet the needs of the many dying in the streets of Calcutta. She replied simply:

“I am not called to be successful, I am called to be faithful.”

In today’s world, success is often defined by measurable outcomes. It is quantified, analysed, and reported. In leadership and governance spaces, we rightly ask questions such as: Where are the figures? and What evidence do we have of accountability?

Indeed, robust organisational stewardship is essential for the effective functioning of the Church as it operates within society. In a time when trust is increasingly fragile, professionalism, integrity, and sound governance are vital as we carry out our responsibilities and fiduciary duties.

Yet, beyond all systems and structures, Scripture reminds us that we are first and foremost called to be faithful.

Faithfulness is not always visible. The small acts of obedience, the quiet sacrifices, and the unseen service often go unnoticed. They may even be overshadowed by what the world considers more significant achievements.

In 1 Corinthians 3:6 (NKJV), Paul writes:

“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.”

Our role is not to produce the results, but to remain faithful in the task entrusted to us. The outcome belongs to God.

There is a subtle temptation to compare ourselves with others, to measure our worth against what appears to be success. Rather than competing, we are invited to rejoice in what God is doing through others, while remaining committed to our own calling.

God has entrusted each of us with unique gifts, opportunities, and responsibilities. Faithfulness means stewarding these well, regardless of recognition or reward.

In Revelation 2:10 (NKJV), we are reminded:

“…Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

Faithfulness is refined under pressure. Its strength is revealed in adversity. Yet God assures us that He sees, He remembers, and He rewards.

In a results-driven world, God calls us to faithfulness, steady, consistent, and unwavering.

Prayer

Almighty God

In a world that often measures success by results, remind us that You call us to faithfulness. Teach us to serve You in the small and unseen moments, with integrity and devotion.

Help us not to compare ourselves with others, but to remain committed to the work You have entrusted to us. Strengthen us in times of testing, and guide us to follow Your will in all things.

May our lives reflect faithful stewardship, bringing glory to Your name.

Amen.
